PATIENCE PAYS
In today’s Gospel, Jesus uses nature to show how God’s kingdom grows quietly, gradually, and offers shelter to all. God’s unseen presence likewise sustains us and keeps the universe in harmony—the quiet miracles of daily life. Both parables teach that growth unfolds over time and requires patience.
Patience may seem like delay or weakness, but prayer and humility help us cultivate it. A journey’s first steps can be difficult, yet lead to fruitfulness. Nature reminds us that growth takes time. Exercise, healthy eating, and medical checkups matter, but we can also recognize God’s loving care in sustaining us. Do we see God at work, return that love, or take it for granted? Do we show love for God by caring for others? Are we patient, or eager for results? Waiting on the Lord can strengthen us through every trouble.
Jesus’ parables of the mustard seed and yeast also speak of faith. As the seed grows and yeast leavens dough, faith grows when people hear and live God’s word, helping build the kingdom. What kind of faith do we have? Do we seek God’s kingdom before earthly pleasures and trust Christ’s promise? Do we pray and reflect on the kingdom so others can see it in us? As we wait for the Lord, may we remember that patience is difficult, but its fruit is sweet. May we grow as God intends and share our growth with others. Amen.
Prayer
Lord, teach me to seek you, and reveal yourself to me when I seek you. For I cannot seek you unless you first teach me, nor find you unless you first reveal yourself to me. Let me seek you in longing and long for you in seeking. Let me find you in love, and love you in finding.
(St. Ambrose of Milan, Bishop)
