Prayer and Meditation

In today’s gospel, our Lord provided his disciples with the blueprint for all prayer—’The Lord’s Prayer,’ also known as the ‘Our Father.’ He emphasized that aligning our petitions with God's will is essential. Recognizing God’s plan in everything we do helps us stay humble, entrusting all to Him. We are called to do this with persistent faith, remembering that our relationship with God remains righteous in His sight, even when faced with challenges.

Today we also celebrate the memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary, a feast characterized by steadfastness and perseverance in prayer. It commemorates the miraculous victory of Christendom at the Battle of Lepanto, where Christian forces triumphed over the Ottoman invasion through the intercession of Our Lady, ‘Refuge of Christians.’

The Ottoman Empire was among the most powerful and enduring dynasties in history, ruling vast territories across the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and North Africa for over 600 years. During this time, Sultan Selim II sought to conquer all of Christendom, aiming to expand his empire across Western lands. Despite being a man weakened by excess and debauchery, he pursued this ambition relentlessly.

Meanwhile, Pope Saint Pius V led the charge in prayer and fasting, raising his hands to heaven like Moses on the mountain, calling upon divine aid. The decisive Battle of Lepanto took place on October 7, 1571, where Christian naval forces clashed with the Ottomans over control of Cyprus. The victory shattered the Ottoman fleet and marked a turning point.

As the battle raged, groups gathered in the Church of Minerva, praying the Rosary with reverence and hope for victory. At that crucial moment, The Pope suddenly opened the window and gazed for a moment at the heavens. After closing the casement, he told the cardinals he had been speaking with earlier that it was no longer the time to discuss business, but to thank God for granting victory to the Christian arms. As a result, he attributed the victory to Our Lady of the Rosary, establishing it as a festival on the first Sunday of October and including the title “Help of Christians” in the Litany of Loreto.

The Holy Rosary is a meditative prayer that helps us focus on the life of Jesus, our Savior, and Mary’s role in the plan of salvation. It encourages us to remember and reflect on the story of our salvation and to be thankful to God the Father, who answers our prayers whenever we turn to Him.

Many recorded instances show that praying the Rosary has changed the natural course of events, such as wars and natural disasters. What stands out is God’s power, which we access through Mary’s intercession with her Son. We thank Jesus for giving us Our Lady—His Mother—to also be our mother. May we never take the Lord's mercy for granted but instead pray for His will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. Amen
