In today’s Gospel, Jesus broadens the understanding of family: “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act upon it.” To belong to the family of Jesus is not merely to listen to His teachings, but to let His word influence and transform how we relate to and care for others. The Christian heart listens with contemplation, remains present, and offers accompaniment. It allows itself to be moved by compassion. Today, Christ continues to speak through numerous human struggles: “I am here.” Our response should not be one of indifference, but of closeness; not simply words, but presence; not a comfort-based faith, but compassion demonstrated through action. Those who genuinely hear the word of God will ultimately find themselves standing near the cross, where, even today, someone hopes to endure suffering without being alone.

I had just wrapped up the final lecture of the day at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome with my thesis moderator, Professor Lewis Ayres. This is the same prestigious university that counts St. Pope John Paul II and Cardinal Francis Prevost among its illustrious alumni!  On my way home, I called my mom to wish her a Happy Birthday, reminding her of my dad’s passing on the same day over a decade ago. We had a good laugh about a seagull perched near the chimney of the Sistine Chapel when, out of nowhere, the news broke—“Habemus papam!” The Cardinal Deacon proclaimed it loud and clear!   Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year A)   Jer 20.10-13;   Ps 68;   Rom 5.12-15;   Mt 10.26-33 Do not be afraid. The fear of the Lord guides us into the realm of wisdom. The presence of God should inspire awe, wonder, and a profound sense of reverence. Here, 'fear' does not refer to shock, horror, or terror, but to the deep respect one feels in the presence of a being that transcends our senses and the material universe—a recognition of the divine beyond external appearances.
