Today we observe the solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a doctrine solemnly proclaimed by Pope Pius XII in 1950. This event reflects the profound belief that at the conclusion of her earthly life, the Blessed Virgin was brought to heaven, body and soul. When we contemplate this doctrine and consider its full context, we recognize its significance as having universal and cosmic implications. The Assumption of Our Lady is central to chistocentric theology, highlighting the comprehensive redemption of humankind.
Humanity experienced a fall from grace, and the original sin has left a lasting mark on the world. Creation itself seemed to await restoration, and this hopeful renewal began with a divine intervention—an act of new initiation. It was as if the Divine, observing the circumstances with sorrow, decided to pause and embark on a new beginning. This new chapter was embodied in a human being—who would serve as the prototype and foundation of a transformed humanity. This pivotal figure was and remains the Blessed Virgin Mary.
In her, a new epoch was inaugurated. She was chosen to be the Mother of the Savior and was granted the unique privilege of embodying both spiritual and corporeal perfection—untainted by sin, both original and personal. Her angelic purity combined with human virtue, forming a symbol of divine perfection. Her role as Mother of the Redeemer signified the reversal of humanity’s initial failure. Her bodily Assumption exemplifies the promising potential for human renewal. Her assumption into heaven signifies that we, too, trust in the work of divine grace.
In Mary’s Assumption, the Creator completes his masterpiece, reigns alongside her by the throne of her Son, and graciously grants her authority and grace. She stands as our Queen, interceding on our behalf, guiding us towards being re-created in the likeness of Christ, her Son. Through her, and by the grace she graciously receives, we are offered hope to rise from death, attain heaven, and be crowned with the eternal glory prepared by God for those who sincerely love Him. Amen.
