Today’s readings inspire us to embrace the amazing responsibilities and incredible rewards of being true members of the faithful. In the first reading, Paul energizes believers to recognize God's abundant blessings, celebrate their spiritual growth, and stay committed in their faith until the triumphant return of Lord Jesus. The Gospel (Mt 24:42-51) urges us to always stay alert because nobody knows exactly when our life on Earth will end. We can’t pick and choose when to live out our Christianity; instead, we must live it every moment so that when the Lord calls, we’ll be ready and pure.

Today, we celebrate St. Monica, the incredible mother of St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo. She is celebrated for her unwavering faith, relentless prayer, patience, and deep love for her family. Her husband was not initially a Christian and had a difficult temperament, and her son Augustine wandered far from the faith in his youth. Despite these challenges, Monica refused to give up. She prayed tirelessly, endured setbacks, and trusted God through every trial.
Her perseverance paid off in a spectacular way. Augustine became a Christian, baptized by Saint Ambrose, and grew to become one of history’s most influential theologians and bishops. Monica passed away shortly afterward, but her legacy of faith endured.
There’s something profoundly beautiful about St. Monica: her greatest victories didn’t come through power or arguments, but through steadfast, faithful perseverance.
Monica teaches us that sometimes prayer takes a long time—and when nothing seems to change, it’s easy to wonder, “Is God listening? Why isn’t anything happening?” She knew this feeling intimately.
She prayed while Augustine wandered.
She hoped through her family’s struggles.
She waited when the answers seemed so far away.
And she never allowed delay to turn into despair.
