Today, the Church commemorates St. Alphonsus Liguori, the Neapolitan lawyer who became a priest, bishop, and Doctor of the Church. His writings on moral theology earned him a title still used today: the Gentle Doctor. Alphonsus envisioned the confessor as a healer of souls—someone whose role was not to interrogate or overlook, but to heal. He spoke out against confessors who used the sacrament to shame rather than to restore, emphasizing that the law exists to help a person grow closer to God, not to crush them beneath it.
Most of us will never sit in a confessional and hear another person’s sins. Yet, we are constantly called to be listeners and guides for others—a spouse, a friend, a coworker, or a struggling adult child. Alphonsus’s approach applies just as much to us as it did to his priests.
Do we tell the people we care about what they need to hear in a way that can actually be received? Or do we sugarcoat the truth, rendering it useless, or deliver it so bluntly that it’s impossible to hear?
Today’s readings show what happens when that balance is lost. Jeremiah stood before priests and princes who couldn’t accept his warning about the fate of the Temple; only Ahikam’s protection saved him. Similarly, Herod knew that executing John the Baptist was wrong—scripture tells us he feared and even liked hearing him—but he killed him anyway, more afraid of losing face before his guests than of doing what was right. In both cases, truth was seen not as an invitation to conversion but as a threat, and the one speaking it paid the price.
Alphonsus never asked the Church to lower its standards—only to remember why it sets them: not to condemn, but to heal. That’s also our task when someone we love needs an honest and healing word. Where in our own lives is someone waiting for that—spoken gently, with tenderness, not with harshness or silence? Alphonsus, Gentle Doctor of souls, teach us how to become gentle listeners ourselves.Amen.
