SAINT MARK:A REMARKABLE DISCIPLE

Mark was a cousin of Barnabas (also known as Joseph) from Cyprus, and he accompanied the apostle Paul on his first missionary journey around 46-48 AD. Later, he traveled with Paul to Rome during Paul's final imprisonment. Identified with John Mark, he initially departed from the first missionary journey and returned to Jerusalem, as recorded in Acts 12:25 and 13:13. St. Paul at one point expressed reservations about Mark's suitability for further missionary work, citing that "he had deserted us" during their initial endeavors, which is documented in Acts 15:37-39. Such concerns highlight the challenges faced in the journey of faith and service, especially amid hardships and differing commitments.

Barnabas, whose real name was Joseph and who was a Levite from Cyprus, strongly advocated for Mark, leading to a temporary separation from Paul and the continuation of their work in different directions—Barnabas taking Mark and sailing to Cyprus, his homeland, to strengthen the church there (Acts 15:39). Barnabas was also known for his generous mentorship and encouragement towards young believers. Additionally, Mark was mentored by St. Peter, who referred to him as "my son” (1 Peter 5:13), indicating a close discipleship relationship. Over time, Mark demonstrated his growth and reliability through his service, eventually earning the confidence of St. Paul, who noted that the mature Mark “can be of great service to me” (2 Timothy 4:11). 

Reflecting on Mark's journey can encourage those who may have faced fears or setbacks, possibly due to a lack of supportive spiritual mentorship or personal doubts. Mark’s perseverance, trust in God, and eventual contributions as an evangelist—including authoring the Gospel of Mark from Peter’s perspective—are inspiring. He is credited with establishing the Christian church in Alexandria, Egypt, where he became the first bishop. According to tradition, he faced martyrdom after preaching against pagan practices, enduring torment and persecution under the Roman emperor Nero, including being dragged through the streets and burned.

According to early Christian accounts, an extraordinary rainstorm—considered by many as miraculous—extinguished the flames when pagans attempted to burn his body, allowing Christians to recover it and give him a proper burial. Today, we are reminded of the importance of boldly proclaiming the good news. There are mountains to climb and valleys to traverse, we are encouraged to remain steadfast, trusting that God will guide and protect us always. May he choose and qualify us for his favor and any form of good works.
