Today we commemorate the Holy Innocents, tragically murdered by King Herod in his ruthless attempt to eliminate the infant Jesus, whom we recognize as our Savior. This historical event serves as a stark reminder that the “Herods” of today continue to inflict suffering on innocent lives, evident in modern conflicts across regions such as Bethlehem, Afghanistan, Syria, and even within our borders in the U.S. and Nigeria. As we reflect on the Holy Innocents, it is crucial to acknowledge the ongoing plight of the innocent, both past and present, who endure violence at the hands of those wielding power.



In this context, we reference Mary, Joseph, and Jesus as a refugee family—an embodiment of resilience and sacrifice. They exemplified the necessity of uprooting their lives and relocating to preserve their safety, highlighting the human cost of conflict and persecution. Just three days ago, we celebrated the nativity of Jesus, born in humble conditions in Bethlehem. He symbolizes the divine light that illuminates our path amid adversity, offering hope to navigate through darkness.



As followers of this light, we are compelled to express gratitude to our Creator, foster relationships with the vulnerable, and advocate for justice. The arrival of the Prince of Peace, Emmanuel—God With Us—marks a transformative moment. Let us embody this message of renewal in our lives, striving for peace to permeate the hearts of all individuals today and in the future. Amen.

They witness the behavior of the tenant farmers in a parable, which mirrors their violence, selfishness, and desire for possession. Despite being confronted with the truth, they are too afraid to change and miss the opportunity for a conversion of heart. Instead, they react defensively and deceive themselves, eventually acting out the negative roles depicted in the parable.  The Church commemorates the Martyrs of Uganda today, particularly St. Charles Lwanga and their companions, who bore witness to Christ by sacrificing their lives. This serves as a reminder for us to be faithful stewards of God's creation and caretakers of His people, willing to serve with love and faith, even to the point of laying down our lives.
