DO YOU BELIEVE IN JESUS THE SON OF GOD? 


As the discourses continue, Jesus begins to emphasize on who He is and what he does in and through us rather than what he himself had done among them. These discourses are building a bridge between Him and faith in Him. In this passage, we hear the familiar words of God spoken to Moses, "I am." Jesus repeats three times, "I am in the Father," "I am in the Father," and "I am going to the Father."



The disciples found it difficult to believe that they could do greater works than Jesus. They couldn't understand how they could do what Jesus had done, let alone do greater things than Jesus. Just show us, they asked. Jesus had to explain to the disciples, and perhaps we need to understand it too. Our challenge is the same as the disciples' challenge: to confront the world with the Word of God and bring people to faith. The disciples knew Jesus - the Word - of God. We too know the Word of God.


Are we willing to share it? Are we willing to let it transform who we are so that what we manifest to the world is His love - His way of being present to the other, His way of seeing the presence of God in others, in all of creation, His way of noticing the presence of God in every situation - the wonderful times and events and the painful times and events? Jesus introduced His Father not so much with words, but with actions, with presence, with love. Can we do the same so that God can work miracles through us?

As it says in Psalms 145, "The Lord is near to all who call upon Him." Our prayer life can be as simple as coming to Jesus and seeking Him for rest, as stated in Matthew 11:28. They witness the behavior of the tenant farmers in a parable, which mirrors their violence, selfishness, and desire for possession. Despite being confronted with the truth, they are too afraid to change and miss the opportunity for a conversion of heart. Instead, they react defensively and deceive themselves, eventually acting out the negative roles depicted in the parable.  The Church commemorates the Martyrs of Uganda today, particularly St. Charles Lwanga and their companions, who bore witness to Christ by sacrificing their lives. This serves as a reminder for us to be faithful stewards of God's creation and caretakers of His people, willing to serve with love and faith, even to the point of laying down our lives.

The brief exchanges between Jesus and the two potential disciples remind us of the challenges of true discipleship. The stories of the teacher of the law and the man wanting to bury his father emphasize the commitment and sacrifices required to follow Jesus. We see that true discipleship involves a wholehearted dedication to living a life modeled after Jesus. When we think about the earlier experiences of other followers like Peter and Andrew, we are reminded that becoming a disciple may require us to let go of our old ways and follow Jesus without hesitation.
